About Julia Odell
I’ve been living in Yorkshire, UK, for 20 years. I gained a BA (Hons) at Ripon St Johns majoring in ceramics but have had no formal, degree level, training in painting. Almost all of what I have learned is self taught. After leaving university I spent many years teaching vocational art courses and ceramic sculpture. I have now given up both teaching and ceramics to pursue painting full time.
I currently exhibit at galleries around Yorkshire and have exhibited, and sold, internationally. Many of my paintings now hang at various locations in the United States and Europe.
I believe that inspiration for art is all around and particularly in the local environment. I source ideas from my local community and hope that my affection for it is imparted to the viewer. I feel that the appreciation, and application, of painting should be instinctive. An emotive response should be felt instinctively and not learned, forced, nor determined by the art establishment current preference.
I intend to continue to develop my own style while investigating the marriage of cartoon and reality with the varied landscapes of Yorkshire.
I use acrylics because they are the new oils! The technologies have now developed to such a stage that the artist can have all the benefits of oils without any of the traditional drawbacks. There is very little that cannot be done with today’s best quality acrylics. I use professional, artists’ quality, Winsor & Newton paints and mediums – with quality pigments tested to last 100s of years.
